I listen to the Voice I am convinced I cannot hear. It protects me by knowing for me that there is nothing to be protected from. This Voice is everything I am in truth. It is the true "I". I think I cannot hear the Voice because I believe wrongly that the loud voice (the ego) is real.
The "I" who now types these letters thinks it is a body, or at least in a body, but the body is unreal, nothing but an image designed to hide my sense of fear, and guilt that came from the fear...but the only thing that "came from" anywhere, is God's holy Son. We are God's Son. None is special, meaning none is isolated. The fear was over in the same instant it seemed to come. In our terms, we awoke long ago, and were always home. "I awoke long ago, and went home."
It always seems hard when we bring teaching into practice in The Real World. We want little to do with our lofty beliefs when things are not going well. But what is the point of having them if we cannot use them to help us when we are in turmoil?
I look "out" at the world, and I say, "This is inside my mind. I am doing this." I am doing this is never an accusation. It is a blessing. There is nothing or no one to accuse me except me...this small "I" that thinks it types, and goes to work, and wants things but does not know why. A Course In Miracles says we are not seeing, but making images. We forgot that our mind is very powerful and never stops creating. We have hypnotized ourselves into believing we are each one alone inside a body.
The word, blessing just came into my mind. Remember that there are no opposites. Love as Love is has no opposite...so it is with peace and blessing, and The Whole of God. God is indeed whole, but this does not mean that God is limited. Words cannot define or describe what God actually is. I can and do experience God to my own level of understanding (the little "I"); God is more and more of God Itself. Or Himself, whatever word you prefer. God is Love. This means everything we think we see, never took place...except the love; loving thoughts that transcend our fear as we look out at a dangerous world. But we forgot that we are forming that world. So if it is dangerous it is we who make it so. If we could remember that we are part of God, and allow ourselves to know this is not arrogant, we would awaken and return to Him Who we never could leave.
Yet we have awakened and returned. It is not the Will of God that God's Son be anything other than just that. God's Son. Only this.
Thus the Voice is "heard": Change the way you see the world, and the world you see will change.
All our image-making did nothing. God did not create the world we think we see, but God created His Son, and as His Son, we can imagine as well as create.

Only This, pg 23
Truth comes through this filter of mind, thus may appear to contradict itself. Earlier, I spoke of Self as multi-layered, but there are no layers. This is a simple distortion, and the reader should be able to tell the difference. In this writing, this book of essays, I am a man, writing of his true Self, using the small self to do so. I have many issues, resentments...in short, I am a person. But this person has learned to move aside as much as he can in order to receive the message...the person I seem to be is not my true Self, it is the self I put on to hide from God.
That is the basic reason we are "here". We desire to hide from our Creator. So powerful is mind, that this desire formed the world in the blink of an eye.
The individual can rise above the shouting of the small self, because there is nothing there. This shouting makes no sound, thus cannot be heard. Simple images cannot harm us...nothing can harm us. There exists nothing that can harm. There is whatever God is, and everything "He" created. The more we can understand this, the more we can move through the filter that is not there, and see more clearly, and by seeing more clearly, comprehend what "All is well" means. "Yes, but the suffering...the cruelty..." We have hypnotized ourselves into thinking it is kind to express in such a way, but in truth we are keeping our eye on the very thing we wish to end. We are demanding its "reality" because by the virtue of suffering, we have a "reason" to keep hiding. A Course In Miracles teaches that everything in the world can hurt us.
This is the dichotomy. This is what we must understand as completely as possible, if we wish to stop hiding. Everything in the world has the potential for pain. There is this two-edged-sword attribute to everything. The electrical power that allows me to write here can also burn this house down. The gas we use to cook can kill us if we breathe it. I invite the reader to go slowly, and sense the reaction to these words. Listen for that still voice. Often the simplest idea is the one we bypass.
Our true state of being is abstract, non-specific, yet we are obviously capable of focus. Our true state has no gradations, no mood swings...oddly, perhaps, this quality is why we are able to perceive gradations, but only as gradations, levels, opposing attributes (illusions).
Each individual knows these things. Each knows the power of mind. Herein lies our freedom. I do not speak of freedom to turn away from (ignore) suffering because we know it is not real, but to heal it through our love. But by clucking the tongue, and declaring, "How sad", we are healing nothing. Again, we are upholding the very thing we claim to want ended.
It seems too big, too complicated, but it is the simplest thing. If what I say is true, what ACIM teaches is true, added to all our other yearnings for understanding, then we know as well that we need do nothing. This is where our understanding must come to its highest. "Do nothing" does not mean what our small self tells us it means. It means turn from the condition, or more clearly, turn to truth. Knowing truth does not preclude caring, but clears away the debris of old attitudes, to allow our sight its vital clarity. Knowing the truth is as it is, we need do nothing, because the truth is the truth (ACIM: "Only the truth is true, and nothing else is true.")
Our promised heritage cannot be but true. If I lend someone a hand, I am helping, not holding an image of "Poor thing." I am knowing the glorious truth of that person, and thus we are helping one another. This one temporarily has less, and I temporarily have more. This means that in our collective terms, our joined consciousness, there is always need, and this goes back to our idea of that double-edged-sword. I once gave a pair of winter gloves to a sleeping man; I wanted to know (after I had gone) that he awoke, and wondered, "Where did these come from?" I wanted that image in my mind, because herein lies our connectedness. All of us. I did not think, "Oh, poor thing." Can you sense the superior attitude there, in those words? This is why we must learn to help and at once know the truth that lies beneath appearances. Herein thrives our strength.
Giving and receiving are the same. Helping and knowing the truth are the same. It is not so that we cannot see these things.

Only This, pg 24
We keep going back and forth between spirituality and physicality. We see the physical as the real world, as we consider spirituality to be a subject, an interest, unable to hold up when "life" gets in the way.
They must be brought together, as must all opposites. Opposites are the main way we keep our focus away from God, our Home. All is one, all is well. Our mind is so powerful, that we can and do, pretend we are not who we actually are.
The world we see is a demand. Truth is a blessing. Which do we want?
We choose constantly. We decide every second between spirit and "life", shadows or light. To bring these together is to bring illusions to truth, as A Course In Miracles teaches. There are no divisions. We were created by perfect Love in one Holy moment that has no past or future...how then can we become unholy, except in nightmares of being separated from our Holiness?
We remain as created; not static, but free, ever expanding and creating and living...but here is this tiny part of us that we projected, "living" its tiny days in this weird bulk, demanding autonomy even though it knows nothing except what it discovers along its demanding way.
Bring opposed points together, see which is real, and which disappears into the nothing from which it seemed to come. Lay these burdens down, show them to the Holy Spirit, God's perfect Thought that saved us from our belief in separation in the twinkling of an eye. Hide nothing from this Teacher, for He cannot compel us to come to Him. Such is our freedom. But in truth we came to Him in the same instant we were created...there is no past.
We already are saved from all dreams of tragedy: dark/light, up/down, the mind-numbing march of days into weeks into months...these hypnotize us, convince us we are bound to move slowly, plodding through atmosphere, taking so long just to get from one point in space to another, when in truth, we have but to think it, and we are there.
We are great, demanding to be little. Naturally, "great" does not cover it, but we must use words. It has been said that we are gods in chemical clothes. But we must go within, demonstrate to ourselves that it is so. We come as individuals, but also as one whole Son of God. Go within and find truth there. For seeking is finding, as giving is receiving.
Bring opposites together, see the oneness there, where only the truth is true...and nothing else can ever be true.
